Apogee Acoustics was founded in 1981 by Jason Bloom and Leo Spiegel, the latter an aeronautics engineer. For almost 20 years, Apogee Acoustics was a dominant high end speaker company. producing many of the finest speakers. The planar designs were so successful that the company started making hybrids to bring the cost and footprint down. This lead to the Centaurus line, of which this model was the middle.
The Centaur has an 8" woofer and a 26" ribbon.
The sound is truly remarkable, hence the popularity among those who know. You simply cannot get the open airiness, the speed and effortless articulation that a ribbon does naturally. The 8" woofer adds the bass and weight of the low frequencies
Frequency response is rated at 38Hz to 20 kHz, with a nominal impedance of 5 ohms, and a minimum of 3 ohms.
