Magnepan 3.7i & JL Audio Fathom f113v.2
The Latest and Greatest Just Arrived.
It was like Christmas - wait it was better than Christmas. New arrivals are a-plenty at Audio Excellence.
They came in a really big flat box and another box. And then Xin and I assembled a pair of Magnepan 3.7is. What a magnificient looking speaker. After some careful trial and error, back and forth, and the use of a ruler, we were happy with the placement of the 3.7i in our main room.
Start with the panels five feet out from the back wall, toe in a little with the ribbon tweeters on the inside, and from a listening position twelve feet from the panels and with the panels seven feet apart, it was a lot of that "Maggie" sound. The 3.7i out of the box proved to be open and clear with bountiful detail articularly presented in a total non-fatiquing manner. The mid-bass was warm and organic and extended into that magical Magnepan midrange.
For such a large speaker, the 3.7i disappears and you hear just the music. You must audition soon.

So we were pretty content with how well we got the 3.7i positioned and the music seemed to lack for nothing. "Alison" by Holly Cole never sounded so more present than at that moment - she was in the room, she was right there.
Xin says to me, "Should we add some Bass?" And I thought, "Why not?"
A couple of weeks ago, some big boxes arrived bearing the JL Audio logo. I had the "mis"fortune of drawing the short straw and took on the task of unpacking the biggest JL box. With a twelve inch woofer and 1800 watts of power, the Fathom f113v.2 is worthy of the JL Audio moniker. I wrestled the 117 pound subwoofer out of its' box and noted how surprisingly compact it looked. And I placed it at one end of the front area of the store and then nothing. Until Xin suggested "Bass".
The Fathom in its' version 2 guise comes complete with a calibrated microphone and a new JL exclusive calibration process called Digital Automatic Room Optimization or "D.A.R.O.". Setup is a breeze and we now have "BASS".
Come hear and feel for yourself.
